Scammers regularly send convincing text messages and emails pretending to be trusted organisations such as banks, delivery companies, HMRC, the NHS, utility providers or even the police. Their aim is to trick you into revealing personal information, banking details or passwords, or to persuade you to make a payment. Common warning signs include unexpected messages, a sense of urgency or threats, offers that seem too good to be true, requests to click on links or call unfamiliar telephone numbers, poor spelling or grammar, and email addresses or web links that don’t quite match the genuine organisation. If you receive a suspicious text or email, do not click on any links, download attachments or call any telephone numbers provided in the message. Instead, contact the organisation directly using a trusted phone number or website that you have found independently. Suspicious text messages can be forwarded free of charge to 7726 (SPAM), helping mobile phone providers block scam messages. Suspicious emails can be forwarded to report@phishing.gov.uk, the National Cyber Security Centre’s Suspicious Email Reporting Service. If you believe you have lost money or shared personal information with a scammer, report it to Report Fraud as soon as possible and contact your bank immediately. | ||
